American Idol’s Wednesday night performances this week took an 80’s turn. With the American Idol finale coming sooner than expected, the top eight have no room for mistakes. As the host Ryan Seacrest says every night, “There can only be one American Idol.”

The top eight contestants performed all their favorite 80’s tunes. Judge Jennifer Lopez commented, “It’s funny that they’re singing their favorite 80’s songs and some of them weren’t even born in the 80’s.” The show was opened with the top eight coming out to see the audiences, as well as the judges.

Highlight performances from Wednesday night’s show included 17-year-old Jena Irene singing the classic rock theme “I Love Rock and Roll.” The judges felt that her performance was a good way to start the show.

The second was 16-year-old “Wild Child” Malaya Watson singing her idol Chaka Khan’s hit song “Through the Fire.” Watson commented, “It’s so great that I got to do a song that kind of made me want to start singing because that’s what I am here for. It just makes me feel good.”

The third best performance of the night was ladies’ man Sam Woolf performing Cyndi Lauper’s number one hit “Time After Time.” Woolf is definitely blessed for still being in the competition because last week the judges used their last save on him. “I am really blessed to still be here in the competition so I gave it all I got,” Woolf said.

The last performance of the night was rocker Caleb Johnson singing “Faithfully” by the band Journey. Judge Harry Connick Jr. commented that,” The first time you brought the song down and brought it to life, I was very proud of you.”

Stay tuned to find out who will go home and who will become the next American Idol.

UPDATE: Thursday night’s elimination was a sad one for American Idol. Watson was eliminated. There were many “whys,” “how comes” and “NO’s.”

The top eight eliminations started out with the judges and the top eight coming out from backstage, ready to see what was going to happen on next. Seacrest didn’t take any time revvealing who would be either staying in the competition or packing their bags and going home. The first one saved was rocker Johnson with the most votes of the night. Next was slow pacer Jessica Meuse who some feel still has not come out of her shell since starting the competition. Then BANG, it was country singer CJ Harris and Watson in the bottom two of the night. So far Alex Preston, Irene, Dexter Roberts and last save of the season Woolf will also be part of next week’s top seven.

People in America could use either #idolagree with the bottom two or #idoldisagree. Lopez was not pleased with the results of the night, but was unable save any since the judges had no more saves. For the first time without any rush, Seacrest told Watson she would go home. As upset as everyone was, Watson felt she had a great time on the show and said, “You haven’t seen the last of me.”

The moment when she brought everyone to tears, including Lopez, while performing Jennifer Hudson’s song “I am Changing” was memorable. “It was very emotional for me because I loved her so much, but we haven’t seen the alst of Malaya Watson,” she said. Tune into FOX to see the top seven rock out next week.
