Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was shot and killed Tuesday, Sept. 10, during the first stop of his “American Comeback” tour at Utah Valley University.
Kirk, 31, was about 20 minutes into his speech when a single shot struck him in the neck, Infront of the crowd of about 3,000 people. Authorities believe the gunman fired from a rooftop nearly 200 yards away before fleeing into a wooded area. Videos have circulated on social media sties showing Kirk being shot in the neck as he was answering a question on gun violence in schools.
Officials have said the incident is being investigated as a political assassination, though no motive has been confirmed. The death of Kirk shows the polarized state of the current status quo of the United States.
In response, the university has suspended all classes and campus events until Monday, Sept. 15, citing safety concerns and the need for community mourning. Public reaction has been divided, as some mourned Kirk, while others have expressed their more conflicted opinions given his controversial debates.
“Without the tragedy there would be no impact,” one person commented, while others emphasized that no matter the opinions Kirk shared, political violence cannot be justified.
As of Wednesday, Sept. 11, the shooter remains unidentified. The FBI has released photos of a person of interest wearing a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeve black shirt. A $100,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest.
Trump, alongside by Democrats and Republicans alike have condemned the violence, also stating that he would award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
