In today’s world, we see everything that’s edited, shortened, or shown in ways that grab many people’s attention, necessarily not telling the truth. The lack of understanding and fact checking in news articles, news segments, videos, movies, shows, and other forms causes things to be taken out of context and change people’s opinions.
From my perspective, it causes many people to misinterpret content. A lot of people only see short clips or headlines online and they immediately conceive opinions without knowing the full story. For example, when a video on social media specifically “Tik Tok”, many individuals easily assume and stereotype which can lead to people spreading rumors or false information.
This can cause outrage, ruin someone’s reputation, or make themselves feel terrible. I feel like if us humans took their time to research and verify if it’s authentic then non-issues like this wouldn’t happen along with social media, it wouldn’t be as toxic either.
It’s scary how one false rumor can ruin someone’s life. We see it all the time with celebrities getting “canceled” for something they said out of context or a movie scene that was misinterpreted. It is so easy to cancel anyone for a small mistake they have made when people don’t understand the full story. It shows fans divided into groups, since everyone is arguing what the truth is even though the truth might not even be real.
Many people should also learn how to know the difference between edited content and factual information instead of jumping into conclusions. Overall, I think society would be fairer and more understandable if people took their time to think critically about what they see online. Knowing the full story before assuming can prevent unnecessary hate and misinformation.
Overall, contexts like these lack to tell us the full truth and misleading information can cause people’s opinions to change. It shows how powerful and scary misinformation can ruin someone’s life when no one takes the time to fact-check.
