Adrienne McRoberts is an 11th grader at Plano Senior High School, a former Lady Wildcat basketball player, and the General Junior Officer of Avid. However, that’s not the only thing that she does. In the 5th grade, Adrienne realized she had a talent for doing hair and hasn’t stopped developing her skills since. As she got older, her hairstyling skills grew, and she was able to provide a wider variety of styles for her customers. She has a range of styles she is capable of doing, such as Box Braids, Lace Fronts, Quick Weaves, and more. What started as a hobby quickly led to a real business that she is profiting from.
“What inspired me to start my own hair business was my mom. She’s a Licensed cosmetologist who taught me her gift, so now I use it to make girls look beautiful.”Adrienne said
For her hair business, starting from scratch had its challenges. “The hardest part about starting this business was building clientele, posting videos, and staying consistent,” Adrienne commented. She found ways to promote her business by starting an Instagram and TikTok account. As well, she advocated for her work on most of her personal social media. Despite the roadblocks she faced, her clientele was able to rise as a result of all the buzz on her social page, giving her business an opportunity to expand.
The success of her business motivated her to stay updated about all of the new popular hairstyles that are trending. “I stay up to date by watching every new trendy video that comes out, and I also get a lot of inspiration from my clients when they show photos asking me to recreate them.”
According to the U.S. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data, 65% of young entrepreneurs’ businesses fail in the first year of coming out, however this wasn’t the case for Adrienne. “I keep my guests by having good customer service, being respectful, and always making sure my clients are comfortable,” she said.
As for some advice for others considering starting their own business, Adrienne said it best, “You don’t need to have it all figured out to begin, starting is the first step to success.”
