With a blazing 13-1 start, head coach Lynn Meger said the girls Basketball team are putting the ball right in the basket. District play begins tonight against Allen.
The team has competed against Rowlett, Wakeland, Naaman Forest and McKinney. So far they’ve won one tournament and got fifth place in a 32-team tournament losing only one game. The players said their expectations have been higher and more wins are waiting for them.
“We have worked for this preseason and postseason since last spring,” Meger said. “We are focused and determined to keep having a season with little distractions and adversity. Our basketball IQ is getting better every game.”
Senior Gabriella Kane has been playing basketball for 10 years. She said she strives to uphold tradition and is very excited for this season’s district games and Sherman Holiday tournament.
“I am determined to give it all each day,” Kane said. “I am confident on going into district, and glad the team can compete and get some wins for our record. The upcoming holiday tournament will be a lot of fun, and great competition to keep us sharp for after the break.”
The team would play in district with Lewisville schools, Allen, Plano East, and Plano West.
“It will be a very difficult district,” Meger said. “But we have high expectations to make the playoffs and will be expected to compete for district title. I feel that we are very prepared and ready for battle in district. The girls’ work ethic and confidence is up. We are very excited about the possibilities ahead.”
Meger said that it takes a lot of work and effort to become a great team and they have to do it together. Meger said the girls have been preparing for district both physically and mentally.
“We are all working together very hard,” junior Haley Wray said. “We are pulling up our own parts and doing above what we are told to do. I’m excited to play the games that really count, and I think that as long as we come in doing what we are capable of with confidence, we can accomplish whatever we want.”
Senior Kylie Harper said there are many stereotypes about girls playing basketball which are not always positive, but the team has shown great potential and according to the records and important games opportunities they’ve prove them wrong.
“Just because we are girls, doesn’t mean we aren’t good at basketball,” Harper said. “Students should come to the games and support us. I am very anxious to see how well we are going to do because we have some really tough competition coming up. But I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people.”
