The Homecoming King has a new title: Mr. Plano. Senior Kurt Doty “wowed” the crowd and panel of judges during the 13th annual Mr Plano pagent, winning two awards, Mr. Plano and the People’s Choice Award.
“I am truly humbled and thankful for receiving this prestigious award,” Doty said. “There’s also a lot of responsibility that comes with being Mr. Plano and Homecoming King, considering anyone can always say ‘C’mon man, shouldn’t You be better than that?’”
The winner of the competition gets to choose where the money from the ticket sales go. Doty chose to donate the money the American Red Cross because the organization gives to the people in need in the country and across the globe.
During the talent portion, Doty performed different acts including a step-routine, rap, beat-box, magic show, marshmallow eating, and a drum solo.
“I got the idea from the difficulties of picking a talent for the show,” Doty said. “I was brainstorming with my buddy Stephen Ritz, when it hit me ‘Why not try to do it all?’ And that’s what I set out to do. I had worked on my talent for nearly a month. It was great to have it come together so nicely in front of such a responsive crowd.”
Doty’s favorite moment in the show was during his rendition of Busta Rhymes’ “Look At Me Now.”
“I actually couldn’t hear myself over the roar of the crowd,” Doty said. “That was a pretty powerful moment that still makes me giggle.”
From the first meeting, Doty believed all the contestents got along well and were supportive of one another.
“I had forgotten that it was a competition until we all lined up at the end for the crowning, because everyone was pulling for everyone the whole time,” Doty said. “I believe 100% that Mr. Plano could have gone to a number of the contestants considering how strong this year’s ballot was. I don’t really know what the judges’ criteria was, but I guess I fit it well enough.”
