One of the most exciting parts about homecoming is the dress-up week leading up to the dance. Student Council created a different dress-up theme everyday that students would dress appropriate to the theme. This year’s themes were: Monday- Rhyme Without a Reason; Tuesday- Twin Day; Wednesday- Soccer Moms vs. BBQ Dads; Thursday- Superhero vs. Villains; Friday- Mums & Garters.
On Monday, a few students participated in the rhyme without a reason theme. I thought this theme was one of the hardest since it was hard trying to find a rhyme. I also felt like I was going to look silly without the other person I was rhyming with, not by my side throughout the day. A lot of people had the same idea for rhymes, for example, rapper and napper or barbie and army were very popular. Aside from these, I also saw a lot of original rhymes as well, like Adam Sandler and disco dancer, or construction worker and Hawaiian surfer. To be fair, this theme was one of the harder themes to participate in, but many students still successfully participated.
Tuesday was another day that was difficult to understand, if students participated or not, since you had to be with your twin to really know. I personally believe that Twin Day was the easiest and the most fun theme to participate in since you don’t have to dress up crazy, and can still participate.
Everybody went all out on Wednesday, and it was hilarious to see. It was also the day most people dressed up for. There were a lot of funny costumes of BBQ dads and tons of people brought accessories, especially tongs, aprons, soccer balls and spoons. I also really enjoyed the fact that teachers participated in this theme as well, like Mr. Dumois—Plano Senior’s journalism department teacher.
On the superhero vs. villains day, many people just wore shirts with their favorite superhero or villain and called it a day. However, I really admired the people that went all out for this day and dressed up as their favorite superhero or villain. One of my favorites that I saw was the Joker and Harley Quinn where two students that I encountered exerted themselves with makeup, outfits and everything.
Friday was my favorite day of homecoming week because of the decorative mums and garters. The Texas high school tradition of wearing these big mums and garters are a very special and big tradition to Texans. I saw some very large mums but I also saw some smaller mums as well, but regardless, they all looked awesome. The only thing I didn’t really like about the mums were the loud cowbells, and the fact that they get in the way sometimes. Besides that, they’re a fun memory to have and wear.
Overall, I thought the homecoming week was a success. The themes were a little harder than usual, but I still thought they were super cool. As a StuCo member, I really appreciated seeing students participate in the themes and show their school spirit. Not only did students participate, but teachers as well, which was really fun to see. It gave students more motivation to dress up if they saw their teacher do it. Personally, homecoming week is always the best week of school, and students, including myself, always look forward to it.
