Economics Club held its first ever meeting Wednesday, September 21, joining the variety of activities available to students.
“The whole idea of the club was to provide an opportunity, especially for juniors, to learn about economics as a career,” co-president senior Ann Cai said. “Part of the goals of our club is not only just to have competitions, not just to eat food, but the goal of moving forward an education based club.”
As part of this goal, Economics Club will be bringing several guest lecturers who put economics into practice every day.
“Anyone can come and listen to our guest speakers,” Cai said. “Our goal is to have important people in the business community come and speak to let us know what is out there”
Prominent speakers Cai hopes to have include Scott Davis, the Vice President of Finance at Frito-Lay and George Yuan, a former economist at the Bank of China.
Economics Club will also provide the opportunity to participate in a variety of competitions.
“Right now we’re looking at BPA, which is Business Professionals of America. We’re also looking at the economics challenge,” vice president senior Sagar Parikh said.
When they’re not preparing for competitions or listening to a guest lecturer, members will also have mini-games, food, and lessons on general economics concepts. Treasurer senior Matt Rindelaub, who studied economics during a summer course at Columbia, will pass on what he’s learned in several lectures.
“For my role specifically, it’s mainly about learning about the general economy,” Rindelaub said. “I think a lot of it is going to involve the federal government because they’re the easiest tangible thing to really connect the economy.”
Duck Week brings the opportunity for a fund raising activity.
“For Duck Week, next semester, we’ll have some kind of marketing thing planned, where we’ll be able to sell things as a fundraiser,” Cai said. “If we don’t need those funds for other purposes in the club, we’ll probably donate it.”
Economics Club is looking for new members, especially juniors, to help keep the club alive when the first officers are gone.
“Honestly it should interest anybody, because the design of the club really isn’t just to focus on economics the subject,” Cai said, “Not everyone will find that interesting. It’s really just to provide real world examples of academic courses, because that will interest anybody.”
