Students throughout the Plano Senior campus are required to wear their IDs visibly at all times. This is a standard policy across most schools in PISD. Wearing badges has always brought up controversy throughout the school between school safety and the freedom of the student body.
The base and origin of the ID’s is for the safety and operation of the campus. Plano Senior high is a very big campus with around 2,500 students attending. The badge is the first source of safety being able to identify students and to regulate access into the school buildings. Having students wear IDs is very important to the teachers and admin as it quickly identifies the students. Also, having
students constantly wear their IDs reduces the chances of a school threatening event to occur on campus. Another reason for IDs is accountability. Getting used to wearing your ID is great for getting students prepared for the workforce, as many workplaces require employees to wear IDs. This could be for many reasons, including safety, resource access, and overall smooth operation.
However, many students still think wearing badges doesn’t make a difference. Many say that IDs are a hassle and are hard to keep up with, if they get lost or broken. Students feel as though IDs don’t prevent dangerous activity and are not useful. Another point is that students at Plano are required to buzz into every building and students don’t want to deal with the extra protocols causing them to be late to many classes. Overall, Wearing an ID has many pros and cons. While students may see wearing an ID as useless, IDs hold a lot of power ensuring students safety and keeping everything running smoothly. Understanding the reasoning behind this policy can open your eyes in this situation. Ensuring the safety of over 2,000 students is a big and important task and that’s exactly why it is important that the school policy enforces the proper use of IDs.
