Think of your favorite memory. It holds a special place in your heart and mind; perhaps a moment filled with laughter, love, or accomplishment. Now imagine slowly losing that memory, along with many other memories that shape the person you are. This is the reality for individuals who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Not only does Alzheimer’s impact those diagnosed, it also deeply affects their families, caregivers, and the communities they are a part of.
Mind Over Matter is a competitive HOSA team here at Plano Senior dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. The team is made up of three juniors: Eileen Jamadi, Nishka Kerkar, and Rewa Pednekar, who are competing in the Community Awareness HOSA team event. Through their campaign, they aim to educate teens and community members about Alzheimer’s, including its risk factors, early warning signs, and lifestyle choices that may reduce the risk of developing the disease.
Mind Over Matter chose to focus on Alzheimer’s awareness because of the profound and personal impact the disease has on individuals and families. Alzheimer’s affects not only memory, but also identity, independence, and relationships, making it one of the most emotionally challenging diseases to witness. Many members of the team have seen the effects of Alzheimer’s within their own communities, which inspired them to take action. They recognized that despite how common the disease is, it is often misunderstood, especially among teens. By raising awareness at a younger age, the team hopes to break stigmas surrounding Alzheimer’s, encourage early education and prevention, and remind others of the importance of compassion and support for those living with the disease and their caregivers.
On Dec. 21, the team hosted an Alzheimer’s awareness event at the Schimelpfenig Public Library. During this event, attendees learned about the science behind Alzheimer’s disease, its prevalence, and its emotional impact on patients and caregivers. In addition to educational discussions, participants took part in meaningful and engaging activities. Attendees wrote heartfelt cards that were later donated to a local memory care facility, with over 50 cards created to offer encouragement and kindness to residents living with Alzheimer’s. They were also invited to write down their favorite memory, allowing them to reflect on the importance of memory and better understand how devastating its loss can be.
Mind Over Matter’s mission does not end here. The team is planning to conduct a bake sale in order to continue raising awareness as well as funds in support of Alzheimer’s education and advocacy. These funds will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
More details about upcoming events which you can take part in, including the bake sale, will be shared soon. To stay updated weekly and support the cause, be sure to follow their instagram @hosamind_over_matter and help spread awareness.
